‘Colloquium on Energy’ lecture and panel discussion, Oct. 31

A “Colloquium on Energy” lecture and panel discussion will be held on Friday, Oct. 31 from 10 am to 12 pm at the Charles F. Knight Executive Education Center. The symposium is part of the Washington University “Sesquicentennial Environmental Initiative” to help better understand the role that research universities can play in addressing issues related to the environment. The lecture and panel discussion is co-sponsored by the John M. Olin School of Business and the School of Engineering and Applied Science Environmental Engineering Science Program.

A Keynote address on “Alternate Energy Sources: The Indian Context,” will be presented by Professor S. P. Sukhatme, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in India and professor emeritus and former director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. A panel discussion on energy related issues will follow Professor Sukhatme’s lecture.

Sukhatme is known for his outstanding contributions both in teaching and research, in the areas of Heat Transfer and Energy. He is the author of nearly 70 academic articles and two widely known text books in Heat Transfer and Solar Energy. As the Director at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Professor Sukhatme took the initiative in establishing two new Schools – one in Management and one in Information Technology. He took over as the Chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in January 2000.

Panel members will include Pratim Biswas, Stifel and Quinette Jens Professor, Washington University; Deborah Chollet, Director of the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Gateway Center for Resource Efficiency; Dennis Houston, Executive Vice-President, ExxonMobil Refining and Supply; Martin J. Lyons, Vice President, Ameren UE; Jason Makansi, President, Pearl Street Inc.; Ambar Rao, Fossett Distinguished Professor of Marketing, Washington University; and Jeroen Swinkels, August Busch Distinguished University Professor, Washington University.
