Keith Boykin, president of the National Black Justice Coalition, to speak about race, sexuality and politics Nov. 13

Boykin is a former special assistant to President Clinton

Keith Boykin, president of the National Black Justice Coalition, will present a lecture on race, sexuality and politics 1 p.m. Nov. 13 in Brown Hall, Room 100.

Boykin, a prominent author and speaker, was a special assistant to the President and director of specialty media during President Bill Clinton’s administration.

“As an openly gay black man, Keith Boykin is able to speak to the challenges and celebrations of the intersection of race and sexual orientation,” says Vincent C. Flewellen, Danforth Urban Fellow at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and lecture organizer.

“He effectively targets gay racism and black homophobia and suggests that conservative forces have substituted the common language of racism for homophobia in order to prevent a potentially powerful coalition of blacks and gays. In light of the recent elections and the national debate regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, Keith’s visit, insight and timely comments are welcomed.”

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the School of Social Work, Spectrum Alliance, the Association of Black Students and the Department of African and Afro-American Studies in Arts & Sciences.
