Latin American intellectuals focus of two-day conference

The Latin American Studies program in Arts & Sciences is sponsoring the 2008 South by Midwest two-day conference called “Rethinking Intellectuals in Latin America.”

Free and open to the public, the conference will be held Nov. 7-8 at the Knight Center on the Danforth Campus.

The conference will be an interdisciplinary gathering with participation of specialists in their fields who shed light on processes of change currently happening in Latin America.

“The conference seeks to engage the current historical period through an interdisciplinary conversation on the cultural politics of knowledge,” said Mabel Morana, Ph.D., the William H. Gass Professor in Arts & Sciences and program director.

“We will focus in particular on the transformative role played by intellectuals — social actors within and beyond academia who operate through movements, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, cultural, literary, political and artistic fields, and the media,” she said.
