WUSTL only NCAA Div. III school with men’s, women’s teams reaching ‘sweet 16’

Washington University in St. Louis is the lone school with both men’s and women’s basketball teams remaining in the 2009 NCAA Division III tournament.

The No. 2 ranked men’s team travels to Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., for Sectional play, Friday-Saturday, March 13-14. Washington University (25-2) takes on No. 3 ranked and host Wheaton (26-2) on Friday at 8 p.m., while No. 1 ranked and unbeaten University of St. Thomas (29-0) will take on No. 7 University of Puget Sound (25-3) in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. The winners will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m. for a berth in the Final Four, held March 20-21 in Salem, Va. The Bears are defending national champions and have made back-to-back Final Four appearances.

The No. 5 women’s team will face the College of St. Benedict in the Sectional Semifinals on Friday in Bloomington, Ill., at 6 p.m., while No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will face sectional host and No. 1 ranked Illinois Wesleyan in the second semifinal match-up at 8 p.m. The winners of each of the semifinal games will meet in the sectional championship on Saturday night at 7 p.m., for a chance to secure a berth to the 2009 NCAA Division III Final Four, held March 20-21, in Holland, Mich.
