Micki Lippe is an acclaimed jewelry artist whose one-of-a-kind and production necklaces and earrings have been shown at galleries and museums across the United States. Her most recent work — frequently inspired by hikes through the great forests of the Pacific Northwest — finds her moving away from the elegant precision of previous pieces in order to reflect the seeming randomness of the natural world.
Born and raised in Memphis, Lippe earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration from Washington University in 1965. Over the years she has displayed her work in more than a dozen solo exhibitions and scores of group shows, including 16 museum exhibits. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Tacoma Art Museum and the Racine Art Museum.
From 1983-85, Lippe served as founder and first president of the Oklahoma Metals Guild. In 1989, shortly after arriving in Seattle, she founded and served as first president of the Seattle Metals Guild, where she has conceived and run several programs. These include the Seattle Women’s Shelter Jewelry Project, which she launched in 1999 and which she continues to run. Guild members and volunteers throughout the community work with Lippe to collect jewelry that is not being worn; the jewelry is then sorted, cleaned, repaired and donated to women’s shelters. In addition, money earned from some donations is used to underwrite basic jewelry classes at one of the residence shelters.
Other administrative experience includes serving as a board member and as secretary of the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. From 2000-03 she served as president of the Society of North American Goldsmiths. Over the years she has taught classes and workshops in jewelry making and related topics for dozens of galleries, art centers, universities and other venues.
