Film & Media Archive hosts Home Movie Day

Learn to preserve, share old movies Oct. 16 at West Campus

Washington University’s Film & Media Archive will host Home Movie Day Saturday, Oct. 16, from noon-4 p.m. at the West Campus Library and Conference Center.

Home Movie Day is an annual event worldwide that invites the public to share and learn to care for their home movies shot on regular 8mm, Super 8mm or 16mm film.

At WUSTL’s Home Movie Day, professionals from the Film & Media Archive at Olin Library will provide tips on the best ways to preserve home movies shot on film and how those movies can be converted to other media forms, such as DVDs, for easier viewing in modern households.

Excerpts of home movies submitted by WUSTL and other local individuals also will be screened for the public and evaluated by Film & Media Archive staff.

Home Movie Day — which first took place in August 2003 — was conceived by a group of film archivists who wanted to promote the preservation of 20th-century home movies shot on film. It has grown into an event that takes place each October in locations around the world.

“Home movies provide us with a unique and intimate look into our cultural heritage,” says Nadia Ghasedi, Washington University film and media archivist. “We must celebrate and cherish them for all they can teach us.”

The event is free and open to the public. The West Campus Library and Conference Center is located in the lower level of the West Campus East Building at 7425 Forsyth Blvd. in Clayton.
