Washington University alumni and students are key players on the staff of the St. Louis Beacon, the region’s online, not-for-profit news publication. The Beacon, which began publishing three years ago, concentrates on in-depth coverage of education, science and medicine, politics, development, cultural events and arts news. In addition to the Beacon’s continuously updated report at www.stlbeacon.org, the organization also sponsors a yearly weeklong arts festival and regular monthly community gatherings called “Beacon and Eggs.”

Beginning with a staff of six, the Beacon has grown to include 21 writers, editors, tech experts and business staffers.

Staff members with a Washington University connection include associate editor Robert W. Duffy, AB ’67; intern Ariana Tobin, AB ’11; reporter and editor Dale Singer, AB ’71; office manager Martin R. Kaplan, MArch ’88; William Freivogel, JD ’01, a member of the Beacon’s board of directors and a contributor of analytical articles on legal issues; Susan Hegger, AB ’71, MA ’73, issues and politics editor; Robert Koenig, AB ’73, the Beacon’s Washington correspondent; and freelance correspondent Puneet Kollipara, AB ’11.

In addition, Singer and Duffy often serve as adjunct members of the Washington University faculty.

The Beacon is housed in the new Nine Network (KETC-TV) building in Grand Center.
