Harris-Perry to speak at school’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Lecture

The School of Medicine will present its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in the Eric P. Newman Education Center.

Melissa V. Harris-Perry, professor of political science at Tulane University and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project on Gender, Race and Politics in the South, is the guest speaker. She also is the author of Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought and of the new book Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America. She appears as a bi-weekly guest on MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts Show and is a frequent guest on The Rachel Maddow Show and The Last Word. She also is a columnist for The Nation magazine.

The lecture is sponsored by The Office of Diversity Programs at the School of Medicine and is free and open to the public.
