Social Change Grants available

Intent-to-apply deadline Jan. 23

The Community Service Office of the Gephardt Institute for Public Service is offering three Social Change Grants of $5,000 or $6,000 for summer 2012. The intent-to-apply notification deadline is Jan. 23, 2012, with proposals due Feb. 10.

WUSTL students with an idea for improving the conditions or opportunities of a community anywhere around the globe are invited to apply. The grants help support full-time summer work for students who are developing and implementing innovative community service projects.

The Community Service Office provides a number of resources to guide students as they build proposals. The office is offering grant drop-in hours on four dates at its location in Room 250 of the Danforth University Center.

In addition, a proposal writing workshop designed to help sharpen students’ application skills is set for 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Room 233 of Danforth University Center. The workshop is open to students working on all types of proposals, regardless of whether they are applying for a Social Change Grant.

In recent years, grant projects have focused on water purification, women’s economic empowerment, music training for under-resourced youth, infant healthcare, creative arts, family planning and many other topics. The grants have funded projects in domestic and international locations, including St. Louis, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., the Marshall Islands, Egypt, India, Uganda and Cambodia.
