Green Cup winners celebrate

Sophomore Lucas Tcheyan of Sigma Chi Fraternity (left); freshman Avital Mandil of South 40 Lee/Beaumont Residential College (center); and Abby Kruszynski, residential college director for Millbrook apartments, each accept the Green Cup award on behalf of their team members at the Green Cup Awards ceremony March 7 at Ursa’s Fireside on the South 40. The Green Cup recognized the fraternity, South 40 residential college and North Side team that reduced its energy use by the highest percentage during the four-week Green Cup competition, which ended Feb. 29. Sigma Chi, which also won the fraternity competition last year, reduced its energy usage by 21 percent; Lee/Beaumont reduced by 25 percent; and Millbrook reduced by 8 percent. During the competition, students reduced their energy usage by 36,193 kilowatt hours, saving approximately 40,000 lbs. of coal from being burned, 67,000 lbs of carbon dioxide from being emitted and $2,100 in energy costs. Trophys were made from recycled bottles. Winners also received $300 to use for programming.
