Above, from left: Gloria Steinem — a pioneering feminist, award-winning journalist and best-selling author — talks with students of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program in Arts & Sciences May 17, the day before the Washington University in St. Louis Commencement, in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge. Linda Nicholson, PhD, interim director and the Susan E. and William P. Stiritz Distinguished Professor of Women’s Studies, looks on. Steinem, who received an honorary doctor of humane letters the next day and also delivered an address for the Brown School Commencement ceremony, took questions from students, offered advice and discussed her own life experiences. Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1972, the first periodical created, owned and operated entirely by women, and remained one of its editors for 15 years. The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program celebrates its 40 anniversary in 2012.
