The softball team closed out regular-season play with a pair of one-run victories over Lindenwood University-Belleville May 5 at the WU Softball Field.
Senior Olivia Cook tossed a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory in game one, and then WUSTL rallied with three runs in the seventh in a 4-3 win in the second game. The team concluded its season with a 28-12 overall record.
Track & field competes at Monmouth
The men’s and women’s track & field teams each had two individual champions to highlight a pair of fourth-place team finishes at the Fighting Scot Invitational May 5 at Monmouth College.
Freshman Melissa Gilkey (javelin) and sophomore Anna Etherington (pole vault) each won events for the women, while seniors Tyler Jackson (110-meter hurdles) and Justin Pieper (high jump) won titles on the men’s side.
Sophomore Jasmine Williams cleared a career-best height of 1.68m to finish second in the women’s high jump. The mark moved her into second on the WUSTL all-time list.
The track & field teams return to action at the Dr. Keeler Invitational Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
Baseball ends regular season on a high note
Sophomore Kyle Billig and senior Brandon Rogalski each set single-season school records as the baseball team closed out its regular-season schedule with an 11-3 win over Fontbonne University May 2.
Billig broke his own single-season stolen bases record by stealing second in the bottom of the first inning. In 40 games this season, he has 35 steals on 36 attempts, which also moved him within three steals of tying the WUSTL career record.
Rogalski tied two of his own single-season records in the game. With a single in the bottom of the sixth, he tied his single-season hits record (74) and increased his WUSTL career-record total to 213. Rogalski also tied his single-season at bats record (169) with five plate appearances in the game.
The team ended the regular season with a 28-12 record and will await official announcement of the qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship to be released on Sunday, May 13.
Women’s golf headed to NCAA championship
The women’s golf team will make its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship with an at-large bid to the NCAA championship Tuesday-Friday, May 8-11, at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
The team is in its fourth season as a varsity sport and ranked No. 2 in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) women’s coaches’ poll. It placed in the top five in nine of 10 tournaments in which it competed.
The Bears won a Division III best six tournaments in 2011-12, including four in the fall season.
Last season, WUSTL tied for eighth place out of 19 teams at the NCAA championship. In 2010, the Bears placed 19th in their first-ever appearance in the postseason.
The championship consists of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The tournament will be contested across 72 holes of play during four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team’s total score.
