Sports update Nov. 20: Cross country and women’s soccer concludes season in NCAA Tournament

The season came to an end last week for three teams — men’s and women’s cross country and women’s soccer — after appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Kevin Sparks finished fourth individually to lead the men’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Sophomore Lucy Cheadle placed 21st overall to earn her second-straight All-America honors for the WUSTL women. The WUSTL men scored 226 points to finish fifth in the team standings, the second-highest finish in school history at the NCAA Championships.

The No. 3 women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to No. 11 Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday in the NCAA Division III Sectional Championship game in St. Louis. WUSTL concluded its season with a 19-2-1 record, with both of its losses coming to Wheaton. The 19 wins by WUSTL set a single-season school record, bettering the mark of 18 set in 2011.
