WUSTL celebrates Earth Week April 22-26

Washington University in St. Louis is celebrating Earth Day Monday, April 22, and many sustainability-themed events are planned for the week of April 22-26 on the Danforth Campus. The School of Medicine Earth Day celebration is set for Thursday, April 25.

Below are some of the highlights:

Monday, April 22

11 a.m.-1 p.m. Earth Week Kickoff in Edison Courtyard near Danforth University Center. Learn about campus green groups. Live music from St. Louis folk/bluegrass band Green Strum Project. The Green Strum Project plays on instruments made from various discarded items and features nationally renowned local talent.

8-9:30 p.m. Climate change panel discussion in Danforth University Center, Tisch Commons. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, includes professors from across the university.

Tuesday, April 23

11 a.m.-3 p.m. Bike tune-up and green tote bag decorating on the north side of Danforth University Center.

5-7 p.m. Earth Hour. Bring a favorite game to Brown Hall, Goldfarb Commons, and enjoy an electronics-free evening.

Wednesday, April 24

6-7 p.m. Net Impact Sustainable Food Discussion in Danforth University Center, Room 248. Featuring local food businesses like Green Bean and Lulu’s.

7-9 p.m. Inklings with Material Monster at Ursa’s on the South 40. An environmental- and monster-themed Inklings workshop.

Thursday, April 25

11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. School of Medicine Earth Day celebration in BJC Institute of Health Hope Plaza around the reflecting pool (rain location: Peds Link). Featuring free bike tune-ups, giveaways, green items to purchase, and information stations on: recycling; energy conservation; transportation and clean air; and gardening and water conservation. Accepting donations of used cellphones and gently used shoes. For information about the medical school celebration, email Wendy Flusser at flusserw@wustl.edu.

Noon-1:30 p.m. Co-op Potluck Picnic at Ginkgo Walk, east of Olin Library. Bring a lunch and a snack to share.

6:45 p.m. WUSTL’s first bike-in movie on Art Hill in Forest Park. Featuring screening of Back to the Future! This 80s-themed ride will leave the Danforth Campus at 6:45 p.m. from two points — the Clocktower and Brookings Hall — and loop around Forest Park before ending on Art Hill. Food trucks will be available during the movie, which begins at 7:45 p.m. Following the movie, the group will bike back to campus. Helmets are required; other items to bring include bike lights, a blanket and money for food trucks. Organized by the Office of Sustainability, Alpha Phi Omega and the North Side Association. Saturday, April 27

2-4 p.m. Burning Kumquat workday at the Kumquat, the student-run organic garden next to the Alumni House on the South 40. Visit burningkumquat.wustl.edu for more information.

5 p.m. Documententary film screening. Watch Cafeteria Man in Danforth University Center, Room 234.
