Demolition preparation under way at Medical Campus

Although there will be no exterior construction fences or lane closures yet, later this month all floors of the Kingshighway, Steinberg and Yalem buildings will be vacant and considered a construction zone. Access to the buildings will be restricted to authorized personnel and contractors. Work taking place over the next several months is in preparation for demolition of those buildings, which will begin in late summer.

Most of this construction will not be visible to employees, except for occasional trucks on the streets. Contractors currently are salvaging casework, furniture and other reusable items. Abatement of hazardous materials is taking place in contained areas and is being monitored by a third-party contractor to ensure safe removal. In connection with the design of the new construction, items of historical significance were cataloged and stored, to be integrated into future plans.

The WUMC Campus Renewal Project encompasses Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s hospitals, with an overall focus on improving the patient and family experience from a clinical and campus perspective.
