Generating discussions, building community through First Year book selection

During her recent visit to the Danforth campus, First Year Reading Program author Eula Biss had many opportunities to discuss her book of essays, Notes from No Man’s Land, with students. Here she leads an informal discussion at Ursa’s Fireside on the South 40. Biss’ essays, which consider subjects of race, culture and identity in America, were widely read and discussed not only by first-year students but also throughout Washington University in St. Louis and in the wider community. Several hundred people attended her Assembly Series talk Sept. 9 at Edison Theatre. Biss also met with students from WUSTL’s Writing Program and with the winners of the First Year Reading Program essay contest. (Credit: Sid Hastings/WUSTL Photos)
