Bridges to close as part of I-64/Hwy 40 project

As part of an ongoing project to construct a new interchange at Tower Grove Avenue and replace four bridges over Interstate 64/Highway 40, the Tower Grove bridge will be closed for about two weeks, beginning Monday, Feb. 3.

When the bridge reopens, it will remain open until March 7 (tentatively), when it and the Boyle Avenue bridge will be closed for demolition.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) expects the new Tower Grove and Boyle avenue bridges to be open in early June. The first two bridges to be demolished and rebuilt – the Taylor and Newstead avenue bridges — opened in November.

Also affected as part of the MoDOT and Washington University Medical Center project is Vandeventer Avenue access to and from I-64/Highway 40. The Vandeventer exit off of I-64/Highway 40 and the westbound on-ramp will continue to be closed until mid- or late May.

Drivers who access the Medical Center via the construction areas are encouraged to consider alternate routes during the project, and employees and students should continue to plan for additional travel time, especially during rush-hour periods.

In most occasions, MoDOT will keep three lanes open on I-64/Highway 40 in both directions weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will keep at least one lane open at all times during off-peak hours. Those lanes, however, will be narrowed and shifted, so extra caution is urged.

Further information from the university is available here.

MoDOT also has information about the project on its website.

And for those seeking information regarding traffic issues related to construction projects in the CORTEX district, a webpage has been created to keep people informed about projects and traffic flow in the area.
