Heidi Prather, DO, professor and chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named president of the North American Spine Society (NASS). Prather is the first woman elected to the position.

A physiatrist, Prather also is a co-director of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine Fellowship and director of the Washington University Chesterfield Orthopaedic Spine Center.

Her practice focuses on the conservative management of injuries to the musculoskeletal system, and she has a special interest in treating young adults with hip and spine injuries as well as female athletes. She is a consultant for the St. Louis Rams and the St. Louis Blues. She also is a member of Washington University’s Medical Program for Performing Artists, which focuses on musculoskeletal injuries in musicians, dancers and other performers.

Prather was chosen as the NASS president during the group’s annual meeting in San Francisco.

“I am honored to be a leader of the largest multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to assisting spine specialists in providing the best possible care for people with spine disorders,” Prather said. “I look forward to assisting as the group takes a number of important steps aimed at tracking patients, shaping health-care policy and improving access to care for all spine patients.”
