What is the purpose of a fashion show? Should outfits demonstrate fundamental skills or express experimental ambition?
The answer, of course, is both, said Jennifer Ingram, lecturer in fashion design at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
“We push students to develop a distinctive point of view,” said Ingram, who will lead 27 sophomore, junior and senior designers in presenting the Sam Fox School’s 86th Annual Fashion Design Show at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26.
“When we put things on the runway, we want to showcase the extensive grounding in construction, pattern-making and fabric manipulation,” Ingram said. “But we also want to explore looks beyond conventional everyday wear.
“People should look at pieces and wonder, ‘How did they make that?’”
The fully choreographed, Paris-style extravaganza — which features dozens of models wearing scores of outfits — will take place at St. Louis Union Station, 1820 Market Street. Doors will open at 2 p.m. A meet-and-greet with designers immediately will follow the show, at 4 p.m.
