Paper on sepsis highlighted in NEJM online forum

Osborn

Tiffany Osborn, MD, associate professor of surgery and of emergency medicine, and her colleagues published a paper April 2 in The New England Journal of Medicine about septic shock. The study was chosen as the focus of a NEJM online forum that drew more than 23,000 views and several thousand podcast listeners.

The paper, titled “Trial of Early, Goal-Directed Resuscitation for Septic Shock,” showed that survival of patients in severe sepsis or septic shock was the same when doctors provided usual care, which includes early diagnosis and early antibiotics and intravenous fluids, compared with a more intricate and intensive protocol. The study results have influenced a re-evaluation of international sepsis guidelines, and they support changing previous Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requirements for hospitals and physicians on how septic patients should be treated.
