Sandell receives Shands Award

Linda J. Sandell, PhD, the Mildred B. Simon Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and co-director of Washington University’s Musculoskeletal Research Center, received the Alfred R. Shands Jr., MD, Award at the Orthopaedic Research Society’s recent annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Sandell’s research focuses on osteoarthritis and gene regulation of proteins in the extracellular matrix. She is editor in chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research; she served as president of the Orthopaedic Research Society from 1999-2000; and she was president of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International from 2010-13.

The Shands Award is presented annually to a U.S. or Canadian citizen who has made significant contributions to orthopaedic surgery and devoted a significant portion of his or her career to furthering knowledge in the field of musculoskeletal disease.
