Deshields named psychosocial oncology society fellow

Deshields

Teresa Deshields, PhD, manager of Siteman Counseling Service at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, has been chosen as a 2015 fellow by the American Psychosocial Oncology Society. The honor recognizes her contributions to the science and practice of psychosocial oncology, or the treatment of social, psychological, spiritual and other aspects of cancer.

Deshields also is an associate professor of clinical medicine at the School of Medicine. At Siteman Counseling Service, she leads a staff of licensed psychologists who work with patients and their families free of charge at all four Siteman locations.

The psychologists:

  • Provide education, counseling and referrals to specific resources
  • Teach coping skills, help with problem solving and provide an outlet for talking about difficulties
  • Offer counseling services to address grief or concerns for couples or families
  • Help connect patients with support groups, peer support and community resources

The American Psychosocial Oncology Society established the honor in 2012 to recognize people who make significant contributions to the field of psychosocial oncology and are dedicated to advancing the multidisciplinary work of the society.
