McCune wins GLBTQ Book of the Year

“Sexual Discretion: Black Masculinity and the Politics of Passing” (University of California Press, 2014) by Jeffrey McCune, PhD, associate professor of performing arts and of women, gender and sexuality studies, both in Arts & Sciences, at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named Book of the Year by the National Communications Association’s GLBTQ Communications Studies Division and Caucus on GLBTQ Concerns.

The book, which examines how social expectations of black masculinity intersect and complicate expressions of same-sex affection and desire, was chosen for advancing the field of communications studies’ understanding of GLBTQ issues; for making a significant contribution to contemporary scholarship on GLBTQ populations and identities; and for demonstrating intellectual rigor and mastery of its field and methodology. “Sexual Discretion” also was selected for “Over the Rainbow,” the American Library Association’s GLBT Round Table 2015 book list.
