Corbetta to receive neurorehabilitation honor

Maurizio Corbetta, MD, an internationally recognized neuroscientist and clinician at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will receive the 2015 Outstanding Neurorehabilitation Clinician Scientist (ONCS) Award.

The American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) Education Foundation Board, which is made up of past ASNR presidents, selected Corbetta, the Norman J. Stupp Professor of Neurology, for the honor.
The award honors scholarly achievements and contributions to knowledge about mechanisms of neural repair; translational research from mechanisms of repair to clinical practice; or clinical neurorehabilitation.

Corbetta will receive the award and present a lecture Oct. 15 at the society’s annual meeting in Chicago. His talk is titled, “A common physiological phenotype of abnormal network connectivity predicts multiple behavioral impairments in stroke.”

Corbetta also is a professor of neurobiology and anatomy and of radiology, and is director of neurorehabilitation at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis.

“I have known Maurizio since our days as residents together at Washington University, and I consider his career since then to be exemplary,” said George F. Wittenberg, MD, PhD, ASNR president. “He has developed and applied cutting-edge techniques in the service of understanding fundamental problems of how the brain works, particularly as it relates to functions important to patients affected by stroke and other neurological disorders. Some of the work gets at the very heart of what makes us human, in way that would make pioneering neurosurgeon and neuroscientist Wilder Penfield proud.”

Among his many honors, Corbetta was recognized in 2014 as a Thomson Reuters “Highly Cited Researcher” in neuroscience and behavior; as one of the top 100 Italian scientists in 2010 (he has dual Italian and U.S. citizenship); and as a Distinguished Senior Investigator at Washington University, in 2008.
