The monthly journal is published by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Founded in 1940, it publishes peer-reviewed, novel research involved in the clinical practice and fundamental understanding of anesthesia practice, including perioperative and critical care, as well as pain medicine.

Every 10 years, the publication selects a new editor-in-chief, and Kharasch, the Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Professor of Anesthesiology and professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, will assume the role of editor-in-chief-elect on Jan. 1, 2016, and then officially take on full editorial responsibility as editor-in-chief of Anesthesiology on July 1.

“It is an honor to be selected to this position,” said Kharasch, who also directs the Center for Clinical Pharmacology, a joint effort of St. Louis College of Pharmacy and the School of Medicine to find better, safer and more effective ways to use prescription medications to improve health.

“This is the journal of record for our field, and it is committed to publishing and disseminating the highest-quality work to inform the daily clinical practice of anesthesiologists and to transform the practice of medicine in our specialty. I am both excited and privileged to help advance that mission.”

Kharasch also serves as director of the anesthesiology department’s Division of Clinical and Translational Research.
