Simon Haroutounian, PhD, assistant professor of anesthesiology, has been named the chief of clinical research for the Washington University Pain Center at the university’s School of Medicine in St. Louis. The appointment was announced Feb. 4.

Recognized as an international leader in the field of pain research, Haroutounian studies neuropathic pain, a complex type of chronic pain that often is accompanied by damage to nerve fibers, which then transmit incorrect signals to other pain centers. In addition, he studies predictors of pain development and of responses to pain treatment.
