A jazz legend returns

Jazz at Holmes presents Gary Peacock Trio March 3

In a career stretching more than 40 years, bassist Gary Peacock has, in the words of National Public Radio, played “with nearly everyone who is or was anyone in jazz.”

At 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, Peacock and renowned pianist Marc Copland, along with drummer Mark Ferber, will return to Washington University in St. Louis as part of the spring Jazz at Holmes Series.

“Gary is the kind of bass player pianists love,” said William Lenihan, director of jazz performance in Arts & Sciences. What’s more, Peacock’s ongoing collaboration with Copland, one of jazz’s most adventurous and lyrical players, “has propelled the modern jazz piano trio in directions closer to that of chamber music, allowing an expansive and inclusive language to develop.”

Tickets are $25, or $15 for seniors, Washington University faculty and staff, and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the Edison Theatre Box Office at 314-935-6543, and at the door.

In addition to the concert, Peacock will lecture for the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2. The talk is free and open to the public and takes place in the Music Classroom Building, Room 102.

Jazz at Holmes will continue March 10 with “A cappella in Jazz,” featuring the St. Louis ensemble Java Jived as well as the university’s own Mosaic Whispers. On March 24, drummer Montez Coleman and his quartet will host an evening titled “St. Louis Traditions Swing.”

On April 7, the series will welcome drummer Thurman Barker and his trio, followed on April 14 by German saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen. Accompanying the latter will be Lenihan on guitar as well as pianist Jay Oliver, and drummer Steve Davis.

Concluding the series, on April 21, will be the young St. Louis trumpeter Kazimu Taylor and his quintet.
