Two mathematics researchers, Irina Holmes and James Pascoe, will spend time at Washington University in St. Louis as recipients of the National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences, a highly competitive award.
Holmes, who received her doctorate in 2014 from Louisiana State University, is currently a Hale Postdoctoral Fellow at Georgia Tech. Holmes will work with Brett Wick, associate professor of mathematics in Arts & Sciences. Holmes’ work is in the field of harmonic analysis, which is central to signal processing, from digital movies to ultrasound pictures.
Pascoe, who received his doctorate in 2015 from the University of California, San Diego, is currently a William Chauvenet Lecturer in Arts & Sciences. He will use the fellowship to extend his time here and work with John McCarthy, the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Mathematics. Pascoe works in the field of operator theory, which provides the mathematical tools needed in quantum mechanics and control theory, such as for automatic pilots.
