Michael Wysession, professor of earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been recognized for his exceptional leadership in geosciences education by the Seismological Society of America (SSA) with the 2016 Frank Press Public Service Award.

Wysession received the award in honor of his devotion to public understanding of earthquakes and their impact on society. In his nomination for the award, his colleagues praised his work on earth and space science education from K-12 to the university level. “Wysession has been active in education throughout his career,” said Seth Stein, a seismologist at Northwestern University. “He also boldly entered the complicated world of K-12 educational policy, with great success.”

The Press Award honors outstanding contributions to the advancement of public safety or public information relating to seismology. Learn more by visiting the SSA website.
