University, Capital Normal start scholarly program

Washington University in St. Louis and Capital Normal University (CNU) in Beijing have established a research cooperation program that aims to enhance and make more broadly available knowledge about the history, society and culture of China.

CNU will provide $15,196 over 12 months to support faculty and student research on contemporary Chinese cities and on U.S. media coverage of China’s urban development since the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008.

The agreement sets up a scholarly exchange program between the universities. Zhao Ma, assistant professor of modern Chinese history and culture in Arts & Sciences, will travel to China, and one CNU professor will travel to St. Louis to conduct research, attend workshops and conferences and give public lectures to students and faculty. Ling Kang, a graduate student in Chinese and in comparative literature in Arts & Sciences, will visit and conduct research in Beijing and Shanghai. In addition, a conference will be held at Washington University.
