Leonard Jarett, MD, the first director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine in the departments of medicine and pathology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Jan. 13, 2018, in Pennsylvania, where he had lived since 1980. He was 81.

Jarett graduated from the School of Medicine in 1962 and remained at the Medical Campus for his residency in anatomic pathology. He joined the faculty in 1966. In addition to his inaugural role with the Division of Laboratory Medicine, he served as the first full-time director of Barnes Hospital Diagnostic Laboratories.

In 1980, he became chair of  the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
