Jeffrey Q. McCune Jr., associate professor of women, gender and sexuality studies and of African and African-American studies, both in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will serve as scholar-in-residence — and deliver the keynote address — for “Bodies, Sexualities, and Masculinities,” the 26th annual conference of the American Men’s Studies Association (AMSA).
Founded in 1991, AMSA aims to globally foster the critical study of men and masculinities through the advancement of feminist-informed scholarship. This year’s conference, hosted by the University of Minnesota, will take place in Minneapolis March 22-25.
McCune has written widely on issues relating to masculinity, particularly black masculinity, as well as queer studies, sexuality theory, critical race theory, performance studies and popular culture. His award-winning book, “Sexual Discretion: Black Masculinity and the Politics of Passing” (2014), examines the lives of African-American men who have sex with men while maintaining a heterosexual lifestyle in public. He is currently completing a manuscript, “On Kanye: A Philosophy of Black Genius.”
The title of McCune’s keynote is “Reading Masculinities in a Time of Perpetual Assault.” It is drawn from his third book project, “Read! An Experiment in Seeing Black.”
