Celebrate Earth Day April 20 at the medical school

Energy conservation, gardening and water conservation, recycling and transportation will be the focus of an Earth Day celebration at the School of Medicine.

The sustainable themes will be represented at four stations around the medical campus from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. April 20. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to visit each station to learn more about each of the themes and pick up small giveaways. The day’s events are sponsored by the school’s Sustainability Action Team.

The tables will be located as follows:

  • Energy Conservation: Shell Lobby, McDonnell Medical Sciences Building. Learn how to make your home more energy-efficient and pick up an energy-efficient light bulb.
  • Gardening and water conservation: BJC Institute of Health Hope Plaza (or BJCIH lobby in case of rain). Learn about composting, rain water collection and sustainable gardening. Pick up some flower or vegetable seeds or one of 150 tree seedlings (first-come, first-served).
  • Recycling: Clinical Sciences Research Building Link. Learn about recycling at home and at work, and pick up “landfill” stickers for waste bins. Also, reusable tote bags will be available for $1.
  • Transportation: Irene Walter Johnson Building Link. Learn about sustainable transportation options, including MetroBus and MetroLink, WeCar, bicycling, car- or van-pooling and more. Enter a drawing to win one of 10 bike locks.

Visitors also can take the School of Medicine’s sustainability pledge.

The information at each table will be available after the event at powerofONE.wustl.edu.

School of Medicine faculty, staff and students also may participate in a group bike ride from the medical center through Forest Park. Participants from the Medical Campus will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the west parking lot of the CID building. Cyclists must have a bicycle and a helmet and complete a release form in advance.
