Men’s track repeats as UAA outdoor champions

The men’s outdoor track and field team captured the 2010 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship April 25 at Bushyhead Track. The women’s team placed third in the field of seven schools.

It was a repeat performance for the men’s team, who also won the UAA outdoor title in 2009. It also marks the first time since 2005-06 that the men’s team won back-to-back outdoor conference championships.

For the women, the meet marked the first time since 1999 they did not capture the UAA outdoor title, ending a remarkable stretch of 10-straight outdoor conference crowns.

The men’s individual champions included junior Ben Harmon (high jump, long jump), sophomore Dan Davis (110-hurdles), junior Scott Pettit (pole vault) and senior Alden Black (3,000-steeplechase).

The women’s conference champions included freshman Anne Diaz-Arrastia (long jump, triple jump), junior Katie Hered (pole vault) and sophomore Liz Phillips (800-meter).

Both teams return to action May 1 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.

Men’s tennis second at UAA Championship

The No. 2 men’s tennis team fell to No. 3 Emory University, 5-2, in the University Athletics Association championship match April 25 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Emory gains the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while WUSTL will receive an at-large bid.

The Bears defeated New York University (9-0) April 23 and Brandeis University (5-1) April 24 to advance to the championship match.

WUSTL began the week with a pair of home victories over NAIA No. 18 Lindenwood University (8-1) and NAIA No. 19 McKendree University (8-1).

The team concludes regular season play at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at the Tao Tennis Center against Division III No. 19 DePauw University.

Softball building another winning streak

The No. 10 softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep (11-3, 8-0) over Westminster College April 21, and a 2-1, eight inning win over Missouri Baptist University April 24.

Prior to the game against Missouri Baptist, WUSTL honored its four seniors: Megan Fieser, Ashton Hitchcock, Caitlyn Hoffman and Carter Malouf. The Class of 2010 has posted an overall record of 118-41 (.742) with three University Athletic Association championships and three NCAA tournament appearances.

The Bears (31-6) travel to Greenville College for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, April 29.

Baseball falls short at Milliken

The baseball team dropped a back-and-forth game at Millikin University, 15-14, April 20, in Decatur, Ill.

The high-scoring contest featured five lead changes and the two teams combined to use 10 pitchers, five for the Bears and five for Millikin.

Junior H.T. Flanagan was the pitcher of record for the Bears, as he threw the final 3.1 innings and fell to 2-3 on the year. He gave up four of the runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
