Sports update March 29

Softball extends winning streak to seven

The No. 18 softball team extended its winning streak with a pair of doubleheader sweeps — at Millikin University March 24 and at home against Illinois Wesleyan University March 27.

Junior pitcher Claire Voris recorded 11 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory in nine innings in the first game over Millikin, and then Washington University pounded out 13 hits in a 7-1 win in the nightcap. Senior Ashton Hitchcock went 3-for-6 with five RBIs in the doubleheader sweep over Illinois Wesleyan. The Bears won the first game 2-0, and then posted a 5-1 victory in the second.

WUSTL (18-4) returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3, with four games at the Hy-Vee Classic in Grinnell, Iowa. The Bears take on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 11 a.m. Friday and then host Grinnell College at 3 p.m., followed by games on Saturday against Graceland University at 11 a.m. and Macalester College at 3 p.m.

All four games will be broadcast live at stretchinternet.com/wustlschedule.html.

Women’s tennis improves to 6-3

The No. 14 women’s tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory with a 7-2 win over NAIA Lindenwood University March 24 at the Tao Tennis Center.

The Bears took early command of the match with three convincing doubles victories and went on to take the top four singles contests against the Lions.

Freshman Kate Klein earned a win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Karina Kocembar to record a win at No. 1 doubles against Lindenwood.

The Bears (6-3) return to action 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, hosting Missouri Baptist University at the Tao Tennis Center.

Baseball plays rare tripleheader March 27

The baseball team played seven of 12 scheduled games last week and managed to post a 5-2 record in those contests. The original schedule was altered because of heavy rain March 25, forcing the cancellation of two doubleheaders.

To begin the week, the Bears split two games at Illinois College March 23, before bouncing back to sweep a doubleheader with Millikin at home March 24. The team was scheduled to meet the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in back-to-back doubleheaders on March 26 and 27, but wet field conditions forced a tripleheader March 27 and the Bears came away winning two of three that day.

WUSTL picked up a 1-0 win in game one behind a stellar pitching performance from senior Jeremy Rogoff, who improved to 5-1 on the year. The Bears lost the second game, 9-3, but came from behind with seven runs over the last two innings to take the rubber match, 10-7.

The team (14-8) returns to action on Friday, April 2, facing Beloit College in a doubleheader at a neutral field in Bloomington, Ill.
