Softball earns ninth straight NCAA appearance

The softball team is making its ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III championship.

WUSTL will play in an eight-team Central Regional Thursday through Monday, May 13-17, at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

The third-seeded Bears, who finished the regular season with a 34-9 overall record, face No. 6 seed Transylvania University at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13. Transylvania (34-9) received at automatic bid after capturing the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.

Top-seeded Ohio Northern University (37-5) takes on No. 8 seed Thomas More College (22-18) in the opening game at 10 a.m. Thursday May 13; followed by No. 4 seed North Central College against No. 5 seed Trine University at noon May 13. No. 2 seed DePauw meets No. 7 seed Denison in the final game of the day at 4 p.m.


WUSTL has made nine straight appearances in the NCAA tournament from 2002-10, and owns an all-time postseason record of 18-16 (.529).

Women’s golf earns first bid to NCAA championship

The women’s golf team will make its first appearance in the NCAA Division III championship. The Bears earned an at-large bid to the NCAA championship, which will be played on Tuesday-Friday, May 11-14, at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

WUSTL women’s golf, in its second season as a varsity sport and ranked No. 14 in the Golf World/NGCA women’s coaches’ poll, placed in the top five in eight of 10 tournaments in which it competed.

The championship will feature both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team’s total score.

Molly Schlamb breaks school record in 800-meter run

Women’s outdoor track and field senior Molly Schlamb set a new school record in the 800-meter run May 7 at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.

Schlamb placed ninth in the competitive field that featured student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions with an NCAA Division III outdoor championship provisional qualifying time of 2:11.11.

Her performance broke the old WUSTL standard of 2:11.89, set by Natalie Badowski in 2007, and ranks as the fifth fastest time posted in Division III this season, giving her a strong chance of qualifying for the national meet.

The Bears’ second NCAA provisional time also came from the women’s 800, where sophomore Erica Jackey placed 20th with a time of 2:14.74.

Both the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams return to action Thursday and Friday, May 13 and 14, at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Ill.

Bayer Named to all-academic team in baseball

Junior baseball player Matt Bayer earned first-team ESPN the Magazine academic all-district VII honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Bayer, who is an academic all-district honoree for the first time in his career, is now eligible for Academic All-America honors as a first-team all-district selection.

A mathematics and economics major with a 3.81 cumulative grade point average, Bayer started all 32 games at designated hitter this season. He finished the year ranked third on the team in batting (.346), fourth in RBIs (26), tied for the team lead in doubles (nine) and hit two home runs.

Sean Wallis receives honor from Jewish Sports Review

For the third time in his career, graduate student point guard Sean Wallis has been named to the 2009-10 Jewish Sports Review Men’s Basketball All-America Team.

Wallis was a first-team All-America selection by D3hoops.com and DIII News, becoming the sixth player in school history to earn all-America accolades in multiple seasons.

A first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) and D3hoops.com all-Midwest Region honoree, he wrapped up his illustrious career as the UAA and WUSTL all-time leader in assists, and is ranked seventh in Division III history with 773 assists.

Wallis also finished 13th on the Washington University all-time scoring list with 1,216 points.

Football lands 12 on honor society

The football team had 12 student-athletes named to the 2010 National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society.

WUSTL tied for the most recipients in all of college football with Brown University and Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Receiving honors were senior linebacker Andrew Berryman, senior linebacker Bryce Buchanan, senior offensive lineman Jared Daiber, senior defensive lineman Nick Gialessas, senior running back Matt Glenn, senior H-back Greg Lachaud, senior defensive back Tim Machan, senior wide receiver Matt Mangini, senior linebacker Jake Mervis, senior defensive back Tim Olivos, senior defensive lineman Brendan O’Mahony, and senior defensive lineman Tim Taylor.
