Men’s tennis advances in NCAA tournament

The No. 7 men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals by defeating No. 20 Kalamazoo College 5-2 in the third round May 16.

The Bears have now made it to the quarterfinals four straight years.

WUSTL (19-4) will face University Athletic Association foe Carnegie Mellon University Tuesday, May 25, at the Don Hunsinger Courts in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Bears received a bye in the first round, and then followed that up with a 5-0 defeat of Carthage College May 15 in the second round.

Softball finishes third in NCAA regional

The No. 17 softball team concluded its season with a 7-3 loss to No. 5 Ohio Northern University May 16 at the NCAA Division III regional at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

WUSTL fought off elimination four times after dropping its first regional contest May 13 to Transylvania University, 4-2, but couldn’t put it together against Ohio Northern.

Junior Claire Voris tossed complete-game shutouts against Denison University May 14 and North Central College May 15 to keep the Bears alive in the NCAA tournament.Following the victory over North Central, senior Caitlyn Hoffman went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs in a 7-5 victory over Trine University.

The loss to Ohio Northern marked the final game for seniors Megan Fieser, Carter Malouf, Ashton Hitchcock and Caitlyn Hoffman. As a group, the four seniors compiled an overall record of 124-46, for a winning percentage of .729. They were a part of three University Athletic Association championships, four NCAA tournament appearances and a second-place finish at the College World Series in 2007.

Women’s tennis falls in third round of NCAA tourney

The No. 21 women’s tennis team saw its run in the NCAA tournament come to an end, as the Bears suffered a 5-0 loss to third ranked University of Chicago May 15 at the Stagg Courts in Chicago, Ill.

The Bears were making their third-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament under head coach Kelly Stahlhuth, and advanced to the third round with a 5-2 win over Calvin College May 14. It was the first time Stahlhuth guided her team to the third round of the NCAA tournament after advancing to the second round in 2008 and 2009.

Earlier in the week, the NCAA women’s tennis committee announced that WUSTL freshman Kate Klein has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III individual championship, scheduled for May 28-30 at the Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Va.

The 2010 ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year, Klein will learn her draw for the individual tournament May 27.

Women’s golf finishes 19th at NCAA tournament

The No. 16 women’s golf team completed its first appearance at the NCAA Division III championship with a 19th-place finish. The four-day event was held May 11-14 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

WUSTL finished with a score of 1,459 (352-374-363-370). Methodist University won its 13th-straight and 23rd overall title with a 72-hole score of 1,281.

Freshman Hannah Buck was the Bears’ top finisher, recording a 21st-place finish with a four-day total of 330 (80-83-84-83).

Senior Kristina Zeschin finished with a score of 369 (88-93-93-95) to tie for 88th place, while sophomore Katie Homa finished in 96th place with a score of 379 (90-98-95-95). Freshman

Melanie Walsh tied for 97th with 381 (94-100-91-96) and junior Kathleen Pettinato finished 104th with a score of 394 (94-105-99-96).

WUSTL records fall at North Central College meet

Junior Taryn Surtees, sophomore Liz Phillips and senior Alden Black all broke a school record and solidified their chances of qualifying for the NCAA outdoor championships as the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational May 13-14.

Surtees broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run, placing third in the event with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 17:00.78; she broke the old WUSTL record of 17:01.92, set by Maggie Grabow in 2005.

Phillips’ school-record breaking performance came in the 1,500-meter run, where she improved on her on all-time best mark, which she set earlier this season. She turned in an NCAA Divisiion III championship automatic qualifying time of 4:28.90 during Friday’s action.

Black placed sixth in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a school-record breaking time of 9:08.32. He clipped Kevin Gale’s previous school record of 9:08.99, set during the 2006 season.

Both teams will have one more week to prepare for the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships as they head back to Naperville, Ill. Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21, for the North Central College Gregory Invitational.
