Sports update Oct. 25

Football wins four in a row

The football team extended it winning streak to four games with a 21-7 win at home over Oberlin College Oct. 23.

Special teams play was the key in the victory. Sophomore Eric Chalifour was 2-of-2 on field goals with a career-long of 48, while junior punter Austin Morman averaged 45.8 yards per punt with a long of 52 yards.

The WUSTL defense also limited Oberlin to 0-for-3 in field goals, including a 37-yarder that was blocked by senior John Schneider in the first quarter. Senior linebacker Kyle Huber made 11 stops to lead the defense, while Schneider added a career-high nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Senior running back Jim O’Brien led the rushing attack with 72 yards on 15 carries.

The Bears improve to 5-2 overall, and are off to their best start since 2007. The team opens University Athletic Association (UAA) play at noon Saturday, Oct. 30 against Carnegie Mellon University.

Women’s soccer wins 8th straight

Junior Emma Brown’s goal 1:41 into the first overtime led the women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead Oct. 25 at Francis Field. Brown scored off a rebound shot from senior Julie Tembunkiart, as the Bears extended its unbeaten streak to eight games.

WUSTL continues its five-game home stand with a pair of conference games this weekend at Francis Field. The Bears hosts Brandeis University at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, followed by a home game at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, against New York University.

WUSTL improved its overall record to 9-5-2 and has not lost since a 2-0 loss to No. 20 Wheaton College Sept. 25.

Men’s soccer rebounds with win over Principia

The No. 15 men’s soccer team bounced back from the season’s first loss to pick up a 4-1 victory over Principia College Oct. 21 at Francis Field.

Sophomore Kenji Kobayashi and freshman Stephen Spanos each scored in the first half of play to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Principia drew within one score when Paul Sanderude deflected a shot off a WUSTL defender and past freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson fewer than four minutes into the second half. The Bears responded by putting two more shots in the net, with senior Cody Costakis and freshman Michael Flowers providing the insurance goals.

The four goals were the most for WUSTL since its 7-0 win over Webster University in the season opener Sept. 1.

The Bears (11-1-3) host Concordia-Moorhead at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, before closing the year with three games against University Athletic Association (UAA) foes.

Cross Country teams finish fourth at meet

The men’s and women’s cross country teams each ran to a fourth-place finish at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Open Oct. 22 at the SIUE cross country course in Edwardsville Ill.

Freshman Tarek Elhage led the WUSTL men at the SIUE Open, finishing in 10th-place overall with a time of 27:08.10. For the women, freshman Gabrielle Reuveni came in 12th-place overall to pace the Bears, finishing the 6K course with a time of 23:59.19.

The race served as a final warm-up for the Bears before this weekend’s University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Riverdale, N.Y. The women’s team will aim to defend the conference title while the men will look to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish.
