Football improves to 4-2

Senior quarterback Stephen Sherman scored from one-yard out to break a tie midway through the fourth quarter as the football team escaped with a 14-13 victory at The College of Wooster Oct. 16.

The game-winning drive was highlighted by a 38-yard reception by freshman wide receiver Drew Sexton. On 3rd-and-5, Sherman had time in the pocket and connected with Sexton across the middle, which got WUSTL into Wooster territory. Senior running Jim O’Brien finished the day with 79 yards on 19 carries, moving past Ted Dunn (1952-54) into fourth on the all-time rushing list with 2,119 yards. Sherman completed 11-of-24 passes for 151 yards, while senior wide receiver Tom Gulyas had five receptions for 57 yards.

Senior linebacker Kyle Huber led the defensive unit with a career-high 11 tackles, while freshman defensive back Scott O’Brien added a career-best nine stops. Washington U.’s defensive unit gave up 320 yards of total offense on the day, and forced three turnovers.

WUSTL (4-2) returns home for its final two games of the 2010 season. Oberlin College comes to Francis Field at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, followed by University Athletic Association opponent Carnegie Mellon University at noon Saturday, Oct. 30.

Women’s soccer on unbeaten streak

The women’s soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to fives games with a victory and a tie in its final two road games of the year.

Junior Lee Ann Felder scored in the first overtime in a 1-0 victory at Case Western Reserve University Oct. 15. Freshman Kate Doyle picked up the assist on the game-winner. Sophomore goalkeeper Clara Jaques made six saves in the victory.

Jaques followed that up with eight saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie at No. 25 University of Rochester Oct. 17. With the tie, WUSTL falls to second place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 2-0-2 (8 points) record. University of Chicago picked up a 2-1 victory at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, vaulting the Maroons into first place with a 3-1 record (9 points).

WUSTL (7-5-2, 2-0-2 UAA) steps out of conference play to host Fontbonne University at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, and Concordia College (Minn.) at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25.

Men’s soccer splits pair of overtime games

The No. 11 men’s soccer team experienced mixed results during its final road trip of the season. The Bears picked up a 1-0 overtime win over Case Western Reserve University Oct. 15, but lost to No. 20 University of Rochester, 2-1, in overtime Oct. 17 — the team’s first loss of the season.

Senior Dylan Roman found the back of the net two minutes into the first overtime period to lead WUSTL past Case Western; it was the first goal of Roman’s career. Sophomore Kenji Kobayashi scored the lone goal for the Bears in the first half of their game with Rochester, but the Yellowjackets netted the game-winning score just 1:18 into the first overtime period.

The loss to Rochester was the first time this season the Bears have yielded two scores in the same game. The Bears now sit at 10-1-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the University Athletic Association, one point behind first place New York University (2-0-2).

WUSTL hosts Principia College at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 in a non-conference game.

Cross country competes in Wisconsin

The men’s and women’s cross country squads ran to fourth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the ultra-competitive University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational Oct. 16 at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis.

Traditionally one of the toughest regular season meets of the year, the Brooks Invitational fielded nearly 40 teams comprising each race, with nine top-25 teams running in the men’s field and 10 ranked team’s on the women’s side.

Junior Michael Burnstein paced the WUSTL men’s team by finishing in second place overall with a time of 24:40, just 17 seconds off the first-place mark of 24:23, set by Michael Spain from North Central.

Junior Liz Phillips was the first to cross the finish line for the Washington U. women’s team, earning a top-10 finish by placing ninth overall with a time of 22:01.

Both teams return to action Friday, Oct. 22, when they compete at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Invitational in Edwardsville, Ill.

Volleyball splits four matches

The No. 1 volleyball team posted a 2-2 record at the second University Athletic Association (UAA) round robin Oct. 16-17 in Waltham, Mass., seeing their undefeated run to start the season come to a close.

The Bears (23-2, 5-2 UAA) opened the weekend by picking up a 23-2 come-from-behind win over second-ranked Emory Oct. 16, and returning to the court to beat Carnegie Mellon University, 3-1, later that day.

However, the Bears played without three injured six-rotation starters Oct. 17, junior middle hitter Lauren Budde, sophomore setter Marilee Fisher and sophomore libero Kelly Pang, and they lost to No. 23 New York University, 3-2, and Case Western Reserve University, 3-1.

The team returns to action at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, hosting Webster University. The two losses over the weekend mean WUSTL will be the No. 3 seed for the UAA Championship, to be held Nov. 5-6, in Cleveland.
