Football snaps losing streak

The football team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 36-6 victory over Westminster College Sept. 25.

The Bears led 10-0 at halftime, and then erupted for 26 second-half points.

Senior quarterback Stephen Sherman threw for a career-high 229 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Sophomore kicker Eric Chalifour tied a school record with three made field goals, connecting on kicks from 27, 33 and 26 yards out. Senior Tom Gulyas had six catches for 88 yards, increasing his career reception total to 100.

Sophomore Daniel Grimm led the rushing attack with 59 yards on three carries, while senior defensive lineman Greg Larson led the defensive unit with seven tackles, three for a loss, 1.5 sacks and a pass break-up.

WUSTL recorded a season-high three interceptions in the victory: senior defensive back Brandon Brown, junior linebacker Kyle Larkin and freshman defensive back Andrew Skalman.

Following a bye week, WUSTL (2-2) will host No. 20 Wabash College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.

Men’s soccer off to best start in 15 years

Following a pair of road wins over Fontbonne University and Wheaton College, the No. 18 men’s soccer team improved to 7-0-2 overall and is off to its best start in 15 seasons. In 1995, the team opened with a 10-0-1 mark en route to a 16-3-2 mark and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Senior midfield Cody Costakis scored once and recorded an assist as the Bears defeated Fontbonne, 2-0, Sept. 22. WUSTL followed that victory with a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Wheaton College Sept. 25.

Junior Patrick McLean scored twice in the second half to lead the Red and Green to victory, with his game winning strike coming in the 87th minute of regulation. He now leads the team in goals (5) and points (10).

WUSTL (7-0-2) returns to action Sunday, Oct. 3, when it hosts No. 10 Emory University at 1:30 p.m. at Francis Field in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams. Emory boasts a 9-0 record heading into Sunday’s showdown.

Both cross country teams third at Saluki Invitational

The No. 2 men’s cross country team and the No. 4 women’s cross country team each ran to a third-place finish at the Southern Illinois University Saluki Invitational Sept. 25 in Carbondale, Ill.

NCAA Division I Southern Illinois won both the men’s and women’s races, with scores of 18 and 35 points respectively. The WUSTL men’s team submitted a team score of 59 points in its 8K race, while the women’s team tallied 75 points in its 5K competition.

The men’s squad featured a pair of top-10 finishes. Senior Dave Spandorfer led the way for the Bears, placing fifth overall with a time 25:51.4, while freshman Caleb Ford grabbed ninth place with a time of 26:19.9. Out front for the women’s team was junior Catherine Reynolds, who finished in 20:18.9.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action Saturday, Oct. 2, when they compete in the competitive Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky.

Women’s golf competes in Midwest Shootout

The women’s golf team shot a 336 to tie for fifth place at the rain-shortened Midwest Shootout Sept. 26 at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill.

Freshman Andrea Hibbert continued strong play in her first season after firing a team-best 79 to finish in sixth place. Hibbert has recorded four-straight rounds under 80, and lowered her average to 79.5.

Women’s soccer drops pair of road games

The women’s soccer team dropped a pair of road games last week at No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan University (3-1) and No. 22 Wheaton College (2-0).

Junior Emma Brown scored the lone goal for the Bears on the trip.

WUSTL (3-5) returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, hosting Principia College at Francis Field.
