Lisa Weingarth, vice president of external affairs at the St. Louis-based nonprofit Rung for Women, has been named to the newly created role of senior adviser for St. Louis initiatives in the Office of the Chancellor. Her appointment is effective Feb. 20.

Work by Sang-Hoon Bae, an assistant professor at the McKelvey School of Engineering, and his international team of collaborators would make next-generation electronics faster and use less power. Their study was published Jan. 18 in Nature.

Washington University recognized distinguished faculty, alumni and friends at the annual Founders Day celebration Nov. 5 at St. Louis Union Station Hotel.

Leila Sadat, a law professor and founder of the Initiative on Gun Violence & Human Rights at Washington University in St. Louis, equates the U.S. government’s failure to prevent and reduce gun violence with violating children’s human rights. “America’s kids are not okay. As gun violence surges and politicians dither, school shootings are traumatizing a generation of youth,” Sadat wrote in a recent essay. “While only one manifestation of America’s gun violence crisis, school shootings are shocking in their ferocity, the senseless and random nature of the violence, and their impact upon millions of young, captive and vulnerable individuals.”

Washington University in St. Louis has announced a transformative fundraising initiative that aims not only to increase financial resources for students at every level of need, including middle-income students, but also to provide a “best-in-class” experience for all students to learn, develop and flourish while on campus and beyond.

Scot R. Bemis, most recently vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer at Dartmouth College, has been named vice chancellor for human resources and institutional equity, announced Shantay Bolton, executive vice chancellor for administration and chief administrative officer.

In his remarks to the Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2022, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin suggested that the graduates ask themselves not what they want to be, but who do they want to be.

Washington University’s 161st Commencement is 9 a.m. Friday, May 20, on Francis Olympic Field. The university will award degrees to approximately 3,800 members of the Class of 2022, and Mae Jemison, MD, the first woman of color to become a NASA astronaut and to travel into space, will deliver the Commencement address.

Arts & Sciences recognized six alumni for their achievements, service and commitment to the liberal arts during its Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner, held March 24 at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.
