Barbara Schaal to become next dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences

Provost Edward S. Macias, PhD, has announced that Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences, will become the university’s next dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Schaal succeeds Gary S. Wihl, the Hortense & Tobias Lewin Distinguished Professor in the Humanities in Arts & Sciences, who will be on leave beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

Schaal wins AIBS Distinguished Scientist Award

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) honored Barbara Schaal, PhD, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, with the 2011-12 AIBS Distinguished Scientist Award June 1.

A landscape-scale experiment in restoring Ozark glades (VIDEO)

A giant experiment is under way at the Tyson Research Center, Washington University in St. Louis’ 2,000-acre outdoor laboratory for ecosystem studies. The experiment, led by Tiffany Knight, PhD, associate professor of biology, will test three different variables in 32 glades with the goal of establishing best practices for restoring not just degraded glade habitats but degraded ecosystems in general. The experiment is expected to draw collaborating scientists locally and around the world.

Washington University to offer master of science degree for biology teachers

Washington University in St. Louis will offer a master of science in biology degree specifically for in-service teachers through University College, its adult, evening and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences. Faculty created and piloted the degree with 90 biology teachers nationwide as a National Science Foundation teacher institute.

Interdisciplinary conference aims to spark new ideas among WUSTL faculty

Washington University Frontiers in Technology and Science, a one-day conference modeled on the Kavli Frontiers of Science conference, hopes to connect WUSTL faculty in the sciences, engineering or mathematics and spur cross-disciplinary collaborations. The conference will be held from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in Cupples I, Room 199.
