Olin Business School and the Human Rights Campaign — the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans — hosted an LGBT Workplace Inclusion Conference at Washington University in St. Louis on Aug. 14.

Young people express strong support for marriage equality, but believe the push for same-sex marriage has diverted too much attention from other important issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, suggests a new national survey by researchers at the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis.

Washington University in St. Louis faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to march in this year’s St. Louis PrideFest Parade at 11 a.m. June 29. WUSTL participants will meet at the parade staging area in Kiener Plaza, located at Seventh and Market streets.

The fourth annual Lavender Recognition Ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in College Hall on the South 40. The ceremony honors the achievements and contributions of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students and their allies.

Christine Dolan, coordinator for LGBT Student Involvement and Leadership, has helped organize events in honor of LGBT History Month. Tonight’s Out in the Workplace event will help such students navigate the job market.

More than 60 Washington University in St. Louis faculty, staff, students and alumni marched in the 2013 Pride STL LGBT parade June 30 in downtown St. Louis. The parade was part of St. Louis PrideFest, a weekend of events and programs designed to foster an understanding and tolerance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recently filed a lawsuit against the Camdenton, Mo. school district for using filtering software to block websites targeted to the gay and lesbian community. “The Supreme Court has made clear that school districts have great latitude in choosing what educational materials they make available to their students,” says Gregory P. Magarian, JD, constitutional law expert and professor of law at Washington University In St. Louis. “However, in a case in 1982, a plurality of the Court suggested that schools may not have the authority to remove materials from school libraries based on viewpoint discrimination.”

The Campus Diversity Collaborative (CDC), which aims to increase awareness of diversity and inclusion issues at Washington University in St. Louis, is seeking new members among faculty and staff. The CDC was founded in 2007 to make diversity and inclusion of all individuals, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation or gender, a priority.
