Washington University first North American member of the University Alliance of the Silk Road
Washington University in St. Louis was installed as the first North American member of the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) at Xi’an Jiaotong University in China, host for theWorld-Class Universities Expo and Conference April 7-10. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton was on hand for the signing ceremony and joins the UASR executive committee.
Wertsch named David R. Francis Distinguished Professor
James V. Wertsch, PhD, founding director of one of the most successful and innovative global scholarship programs in the world, has been named the inaugural David R. Francis Distinguished Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Wertsch is vice chancellor for international affairs and director of the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.
Genin named Global Scholars Fellow at Tsinghua University
Guy Genin, PhD, has been named a 2014 Global Scholars Fellow at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Genin, a professor of mechanical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, will be part of a team studying how engineers can help older adults make decisions about orthopedic surgeries involving rotator cuff repair.
McDonnell International Scholars Academy students travel to New York, meet leaders in finance, media and government
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Washington University in St. Louis’ McDonnell scholars earlier this month. During a spring break trip to New York, McDonnell Academy scholars also met a former Federal Reserve chairman and other leaders in media, politics and finance.
Friedman Center hosts Global Aging Initiative in South Korea
Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton welcomed more than 60 scholars from around the world — including Washington University in St. Louis and representatives from the McDonnell International Scholars Academy partner institutions — to Seoul, South Korea, in June for the Global Aging Initiative. The meeting, sponsored by the Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at WUSTL’s Institute for Public Health, was the first opportunity for scholars to connect and identify opportunities for collaboration on cross-national aging-related research.

McDonnell Academy welcomes 16 new scholars from across the world
The McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis welcomed 16 new graduate and professional students from 11 partner institutions worldwide for the 2012-13 academic year. Admitted into the McDonnell Academy for the first time in 2012 were two scholars from the United States.
