Welcoming the Class of 2022

The Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2022 arrived on the Danforth Campus South 40 with mini-fridges, duvet covers and big hopes for their new home. But they weren’t alone. They were joined by new faculty fellows Jeff Zacks and Lerone Martin.

Washington University’s main move-in day in the South 40 residence halls for new students is Thursday, Aug. 22. Some 1,600 new students (freshmen, transfer and exchange) are arriving for the 2013-14 academic year that begins Aug. 27. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will lead university staff members and upperclass student volunteers in a 7:30 a.m. pep rally as they prepare to welcome the new students and assist with move in throughout the day.

Student volunteers, staff ‘go bananas’ to help newest residents

Aug. 23 was move-in day on the South 40 for incoming students. To get things started, a caped Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton led upperclass student volunteers and university staff members in an early-morning pep rally, which included singing the “Go Bananas” song. From there, everyone rapidly disbursed to welcome the more than 1,700 new students — providing directions, carrying belongings and passing out chocolate chip cookies.

A WUSA welcome: Yearlong peer mentors make transition easier for incoming students

At WUSTL, orientation extends much longer than the five-day Bear Beginnings welcome. Through the WUSA (Washington University Student Associate) program, all incoming students are paired with upperclass peer mentors for the entire first year. The WUSA program is viewed as a model program nationally. Right, a WUSA gets ready for move-in day with the WUSA cheer.

New students move in Aug. 23

More than 1,700 new students move onto campus starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23. Five full days of orientation, better known as Bear Beginnings, take place Aug. 23-Monday, Aug. 27.
