U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services chief counsel to give Tyrrell Williams Lecture April 11
Stephen H. Legomsky, U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services chief counsel, plans to discuss the evolving topic
of immigration law at Washington University in St. Louis on Thursday,
April 11. Legomsky will present the 2012-13 Tyrrell Williams Lecture, “Immigration and the Role of the Government Attorney.”
Political scientist Cohen to speak April 9
Author and political scientist Cathy Cohen studies American politics and particularly how they affect African-Americans, women and the LGBTQ community – never ignoring the intersections between these identity categories. She will be on campus April 9 to give a lecture titled “Race, Sex and Neoliberalism in the Age of Obama.”
Levin elected to American Law Institute
Ronald Levin, JD, the William R. Orthwein Distinguished
Professor of Law, has been elected to the American Law Institute (ALI),
a national independent organization that focuses on producing scholarly
work to clarify and modernize the law. Membership in the ALI is based
on professional achievement and a demonstrated interest in improving the
law. ALI will also honor the Hon. William H. Webster, JD ’49, with the Henry J. Friendly Medal. One of the ALI’s highest honors, the
medal is awarded periodically to individuals who have made significant
contributions to the law.
Composting pilot projects begin on Danforth Campus
The university is increasing composting opportunities on the Danforth Campus through pilot programs with schools and departments. Beginning in August, visitors to Brown Hall and Goldfarb Hall of the Brown School, Anheuser-Busch Hall of the School of Law, and Facilities’ office Millbrook Building will have an opportunity to compost some of their waste.
University of Hong Kong graduate begins prestigious American fellowship
Qing Nian, the daughter of Liu Feng and Nian Wanhong, has been named a McDonnell International Scholar at Washington University in St. Louis. She holds a law degree from the University of Hong Kong, which is one of 15 leading Asian universities partnered with Washington University in St. Louis in the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.
Amy Chua presents theory that exporting free markets and democracy breeds ethnic hatred and global instability for Law School and the Assembly Series
Amy L. Chua, professor of law at Yale University and member of the American Society of International Law’s executive council, will discuss her new book which posits that the West’s exportation of free markets and democratic philosophies to developing countries does more harm than good.
Environmental Initiative Colloquia continue with five programs on the Assembly Series spring schedule
Continuing Washington University’s yearlong Sesquicentennial Environmental Initiative, the final set of colloquia will cover significant issues such as tackling childhood lead poisoning, building a sustainable environment in plant sciences, understanding the effect of aerosols in our air; creating ecological and economically viable structures; and understanding how research universities can impact environmental education and public policy.
