Silverman named head of pediatrics
Gary A. Silverman, MD, PhD, has been named the Harriet B. Spoehrer Professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. With the new appointment, effective in April, Silverman will become pediatrician-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and executive director of the Children’s Discovery Institute, a partnership of the school and hospital.
New chief of pediatric orthopaedic surgery named
Charles A. Goldfarb, MD, has been appointed chief of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. A hand and wrist specialist, Goldfarb currently is a professor of orthopaedic surgery, co-chief of the department’s hand and wrist service and medical director of the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield.
Lane of Kingshighway Boulevard to close for crane construction
At 9 a.m., Friday, Jan. 30, contractors will close one lane of northbound Kingshighway Boulevard, just north of Children’s Place and extending past Parkview Place, to begin construction of a tower crane. The lane will reopen at 3 p.m. the same day.
Second season of ‘The Frontline for Hope’ to air
The second season of “The Frontline for Hope,” a documentary series following patients, families and clinicians at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, will premiere Saturday, Nov. 22. The series highlights School of Medicine physicians and staff and St. Louis Children’s patients and their families.

Pirooz Eghtesady, MD, PhD, has been named the first Emerson Chair in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. He is a professor of surgery and of pediatrics and is chief of the section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at the School of Medicine.
Children’s Discovery Institute awards $3.1 million in pediatric research grants
Scientists researching pediatric lung disease, childhood cancer, malaria and short bowel syndrome will share $3.1 million in new grants from the Children’s Discovery Institute (CDI). The grants, announced earlier this year, will fund 10 research initiatives at the School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

St. Louis region is hot spot of flu activity
The St. Louis region has experienced a sharp uptick in
flu cases in recent weeks, according to Washington University physicians
at Barnes-Jewish Hospital who say they are dealing with a severe flu
outbreak that includes deaths from the illness. The deaths primarily
were of otherwise healthy young and middle-aged adults not vaccinated
against influenza, according to the physicians.
