Cindy Brantmeier, professor of applied linguistics and education, has designed a social reading program that employs online games to help adolescent refugees and immigrants. The results are promising — test scores have improved along with student confidence.

Tutors sought for Each One Teach One program

With more St. Louis public school pupils than ever requesting tutors, WUSTL’s Each One Teach One program is expanding to serve more of them. The Community Service Office is looking for 50 enthusiastic tutors to build relationships, strengthen literacy skills, and foster a love of learning.

‘Public Education at a Crossroads’: Brown School, Teach for America co-sponsor panel discussion Jan. 26

Teach For America-St. Louis and the Brown School Policy Forum at Washington University in St. Louis will host a panel discussion on “St. Louis Public Education at a Crossroads: The Outstanding Schools Act, Turner v. Clayton, and the Future,” at 7:30 p.m.  Thursday, Jan. 26 in Brown Hall, Room 100. The event will bring together Missouri legislators and education officials to discuss how Turner v. Clayton is impacting state legislation.

Area schoolchildren visit, learn, make noise on Danforth Campus

Students from several St. Louis and University City schools have been guests on the Danforth Campus the past few weeks as part of programs to enrich educational experiences for area schoolchildren. Activities included musical, theatrical and dance performances, interactive lectures, tours and visits to exhibitions on campus.

St. Louis Public Schools to benefit from annual volunteer activity​

Fresh off a summer of pool parties and video games, the Washington University Class of 2009 will get to work as soon as they step onto campus. More than 1,000 University students, mainly newly arrived freshmen, will volunteer their time from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 3 to paint, landscape, clean and beautify 11 St. Louis public schools to make the new school year more enjoyable for students and their teachers. It’s all part of the seventh annual Service First, an initiative that introduces first-year University students to community service in the St. Louis area.
