Thurtene Carnival

Thurtene Carnival, one of Washington University’s most time-honored traditions, runs Friday through Sunday, April 13-15, in its new location near Simon Hall and Sumers Recreation Center. Highlights include thrilling rides, student-constructed theaters and attractions, wacky food and entertaining performances.

Thurtene Carnival, the nation’s oldest and largest student-run carnival, will move from its longtime home at the east end of the Danforth Campus at Washington University in St. Louis to the parking lots surrounding historic Francis Field. The carnival, scheduled for April 13-15, will boast the same array of rides, games, student performances and food booths.

Thurtene, the oldest student-run carnival in the United States, returns this weekend to Washington University in St. Louis. The St. Louis community is invited to enjoy carnival rides, live music and theatrical performances. Members of Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry fraternity, will demonstrate how to make Dippin’ Dots from liquid nitrogen, and Zeta Beta Tau will serve fried candy bars and ice cream sandwiches.

Thurtene Carnival of Washington University in St. Louis has selected as its community partner Ready Readers, a leading local nonprofit that inspires children to love books.

Thurtene Carnival drew thousands of revelers to Washington University in St. Louis to enjoy rides, shows and food. The student-run carnival benefited local charity TASK, or Team Activities for Special Kids.

Students at Washington University in St. Louis are working around the clock this week preparing for the Thurtene Carnival, which starts Friday, April 19. The carnival includes facades, miniature house-like structures that student groups build and decorate, inside which carnivalgoers can enjoy student-created plays.

The nation’s oldest and largest student-run carnival gets under way soon. The community event brings together students, faculty and staff from WUSTL with surrounding neighbors and the greater St. Louis community for a weekend filled with rides, carnival fare and family-friendly plays. More than 80,000 people are expected to attend the Thurtene Carnival April 19-21.

Despite a snow storm, students came out for Hoops Day March 24, sponsored by Thurtene Junior Honorary, a lead-up event to the annual carnival. Organizers offered a youth basketball clinic and a 3-on-3 tournament at the Athletic Complex.
