Senior Ji Eun Seo returns an item to Washington University Libraries through the new book drop box on the South 40. Seo and other WUSTL libraries users now can return university library books, music and other materials through the new book drop. The box is located on Shepley Drive across from the South 40 House.

University Libraries and the Alumni Association are hosting a “WUSTL Tweets, Tweetup” at 3 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Olin Library’s Ginkgo Reading Room (Level 1). A tweetup is an in-person networking event for Twitter users to meet their friends/followers in real life.

The Washington University Libraries have acquired the archives of internationally recognized artist Ernest Trova (1927-2009). Trova’s archives, which will be housed in WUSTL’s Modern Graphic History Library, provide researchers a glimpse into his life and his art-making process. 

Michael Suarez, SJ, will speak on “Rare Books in the Digital World” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Steinberg Hall Auditorium on the Danforth Campus. Suarez directs the Rare Book School, an independent, nonprofit institute for the study of books, printing, and related subjects located at the University of Virginia.

Ancient clay cuneiform tablets. Books in Greek and Latin owned and marked by Thomas Jefferson. These aren’t items one might expect to see when visiting a typical library. But collecting and preserving these invaluable resources for future generations of scholars is the mission of Washington University Libraries’ Special Collections and of Anne Posega, head of Special Collections for University Libraries since 1999.

The annual Neureuther book collection essay contest sponsored by Washington University Libraries offers four cash prizes to students who submit short essays about their personal book collections. Any full-time WUSTL undergraduate and graduate student who has a passion for collecting books can compete in the Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition, which offers first- and second-place prizes of $1,000 and $500.

The film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, which opens nationwide today, Aug. 10, depicts a fictional slice of the 1960s Civil Rights movement. Washington University in St. Louis holds one of the largest archives of civil rights media in the United States, thanks to the Henry Hampton collection and Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965, a six-episode documentary on the American civil rights movement.

Olin Library will host a “Sundaes (and Other Treats) in the Library” event Wednesday, July 13, and Thursday, Aug. 4, to help WUSTL faculty and staff members discover or rediscover the services and resources available to them at University Libraries.

The WUSTL Faculty Senate adopted an Open Access Resolution that encourages faculty members to make their scholarly and creative works freely available online. The resolution also includes a recommendation for University Libraries and the Bernard Becker Medical Library to develop the capacity to capture faculty scholarship, make it publicly accessible and preserve it over time.

Getting a Twitter account going for a department or organization is relatively simple, but making the most of the social media platform can be a challenge. Washington University librarians will explore how to use Twitter as a powerful publicity tool in a workshop at Olin Library from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Registration is free and is open to WUSTL students, faculty and staff as well as people from other institutions and nonprofit organizations.
